The apologetic argument: Defined Mary as Theotokos (Mother of God) and condemned Nestorianism. Cyril of Alexandria acted as Rome's representative — the council was opened with the reading of Pope Celestine's condemnation of Nestorius. The council thanked Rome explicitly.
