Martyrdom of St. Agnes of Rome
Agnes, a young Roman girl of noble birth, was martyred for refusing marriage and consecrating her virginity to Christ. Her feast has been celebrated in Rome since the 4th century. Ambrose and Damasus wrote of her courage.
