The great defender of Nicene orthodoxy died after decades of defending the full divinity of Christ against Arianism. Exiled five times by four emperors, he stood alone when nearly the whole episcopate had capitulated. Athanasius contra mundum.

Feast of Athanasius of Alexandria
Athanasius's five exiles are the strongest evidence that the Arian controversy was a genuine theological dispute. He was exiled by emperors who had everything to gain from his compliance. He refused because he understood what was at stake: if the Son is not truly God, the Incarnation is not what Christians claim and salvation is not what the Creed promises.
