Second Vatican Council opens
Pope John XXIII opened the Second Vatican Council with Gaudet Mater Ecclesia. 2,540 bishops attended. The Council produced 16 documents on Scripture, liturgy, ecumenism, religious liberty, and the Church's engagement with the modern world.
