The apologetic argument: Deposed Patriarch Photius and confirmed Ignatius as Patriarch of Constantinople. Reaffirmed papal primacy. The Eastern Orthodox do not recognise this council and instead recognise a later council under Photius (879-880) as the legitimate eighth council.
