Death of St. Bernard of Clairvaux
The last of the Fathers and Doctor of the Church, Bernard dominated 12th century Christianity. He founded 68 monasteries, preached the Second Crusade, defeated Peter Abelard's rationalism at Sens, and wrote extensively on the Virgin Mary.
