Chrysostom's homilies on Hebrews contain the most precise fourth-century statement of the Mass as the one sacrifice of Calvary re-presented: "We do not offer a different sacrifice... but the same always... He who offered is the same who now offers by the ministry of the priests." Many celebrations, one sacrifice — not many sacrifices.

Death of St. John Chrysostom
The Golden-Mouthed Doctor of the Church died in exile at Comana after being deposed as Archbishop of Constantinople by the empress Eudoxia, whom he had offended by his bold preaching against luxury. His commentaries on Scripture remain standard references.
