Feast of Clement of Rome
The key to understanding Clement's letter is who asked him to write it. No one did. Corinth had not appealed to Rome. Clement intervened unbidden — from the other side of the Empire — and he did so with the authority of someone who had the right and duty to intervene. If the Bishop of Rome had only honorary precedence in AD 96, this letter is inexplicable.
