Feast of Ambrose of Milan
Ambrose's treatment of the Eucharist is precise: "That bread is bread before the words of the sacraments; when consecration takes place, the bread becomes the body of Christ." He does not say the bread signifies the body — he says it becomes the body. This is the language of real ontological change, stated as a bishop explaining the sacrament to the newly baptised.

Death of St. Ambrose of Milan
One of the four original Doctors of the Western Church, Ambrose was elected bishop by popular acclamation while still a catechumen. He refused to hand over a basilica to Empress Justina for Arian worship, defended orthodoxy against imperial pressure, and baptised Augustine.
