Dogma of the Immaculate Conception defined
Pope Pius IX defined in Ineffabilis Deus that Mary was preserved from original sin from the first moment of her conception, by the foreseen merits of Christ. The dogma was confirmed by the apparitions at Lourdes four years later when Mary identified herself as 'the Immaculate Conception.'
