Martyrdom of St. Lucy of Syracuse
A Sicilian virgin martyr under Diocletian, whose name means light. One of seven women commemorated in the Roman Canon. Her feast on the shortest days of the year made her a symbol of returning light. Venerated throughout the Catholic and Orthodox churches.
